Toby Tweaked

After looking at Toby for a day or so, I made the decision to put in a background--I'm happier with it now. I feel it grounds him and puts him in a setting rather than just thin air. By the way, he's not after a creature! In order to get him to quit looking at me while I took his photo, I pulled around one of his toys (he's 11+ years old and doesn't play much but he does look), then quickly aimed and clicked while he was still looking at the toy. (The colors don't quite match up in the two photos I've posted due to differences in photo editing while trying to get the colors as true as possible.)

  1. Well, I liked the first version, but I think this is an improvement - the addition of the background not only puts Toby into context, but also creates some nice contrast; you've now got that light/dark line leading the eye up to Toby's face. Very nice!

  3. Thanks! Now to figure out how to frame him! Some folks say double-mat, others say put the glass right on top of it...hm...

  4. Susan, this is just wonderful, awesome work you are doing!! Double mat, always with Pastels. You do not want the pastel to touch the glass. Can't wait to see it framed! On the other sanded surfaces I also do a spacer, some frame shops call it a raised mat. It is cut larger than the regular mat board and is usually thin foam core, it is placed between the painting and the matboard to creat a spacer as well as a place to catch any dust particals that might fall from your piece. It helps keep the mat clean also.
